Our History
A Letter to the Community
R. C. Drury sent out letters in to Fountain residents to announce the opening of the store in 1925.
"A new furniture store will be opened in Fountain on March 7th, whose aim and ambition will be to serve the people of this vicinity in such a manner as to merit their constant patronage. QUALITY, VALUE and SERVICE will be the watch words and the foundation on which this business will be built."
Early Beginnings
Drury’s, originally called Fountain Furniture Company, started as a modest partnership in 1925. Twenty year old, Reuben Drury was sent by his boss, H.P Ferdinant to open a furniture store in Fountain. Their original building was 25’X 75’ and is still in use today. The partnership agreement set Reuben’s salary at $13.00 per week and specified that he was to have “no charge accounts in Fountain.”
Expansion
Reuben Drury bought out his partner in 1926 and changed the name to R.C. Drury Furniture. Joined by his wife, Gladys “Toots” Drury, they ran the business, slowly built a clientele, and weathered the great depression. In 1954 a “modern” building was added to the side of the original building adding another 2,500 square feet of display area. By the mid-1950’s Reuben and Gladys also had two other employees helping with delivery and what they described as “general work”. Their son David joined the company in 1957. Along with more space and a new generation, some of the most prominent brands, including Thomasville and Drexel were added to Drury’s list of vendors. In 1967, David’s wife, Ora Mae opened Drury’s Custom Drapery Studio, which she operated until her death in 2009.
Continued Legacy
Over the years Drury’s has undergone many expansions and updates including major building expansions in 1967 and 1987. With more and more space Drury’s has been able to add more top furniture lines and even bigger display area.
Both third and fourth generation family members are now involved in the day-to-day operations of Drury's Furniture, continuing in the tradition started by Reuben and Toot’s in the 1920’s. We continue to provide the area’s largest display of quality furniture, knowledgeable and helpful staff, and small town, affordable prices in southeastern Minnesota.
